Dear HES Families,

Early on Monday morning our 5th graders left for a week at Nature's Classroom. They are having an amazing time living and learning together! Thank you to our Nature's Classroom coordinators, Mr. C and Mrs. Weatherbee, our teacher chaperones Mrs. Route, Mrs. Phillips, Ms. Walker, and Mrs. Khurana, and our parent chaperones, for making this experience possible.

We hope to see you on Tuesday, October 1, at HES Curriculum Night. Curriculum Night is an opportunity for parents/guardians to meet their child's teachers and learn about the grade level content and learning experiences in store for this year. HERE is a schedule for the evening. You will notice that there are presentations from classroom teachers and opportunities to drop in to meet our specialists, special educators, counselors, and other student support staff.

We will be offering childcare in the cafeteria for families that need it during Curriculum Night. Our local girl scout troop will care for preschoolers (must be potty trained) and AlphaBEST staff members will care for children ages 5 and up. Of course, all students can play together! This service is free and we are grateful to both the girl scouts and AlphaBEST for donating their time. Young toddlers and babies are welcome to stay with a parent.  Advance sign-up for childcare is required. Please fill out this short form by September 27.

Have a great week!

Rebecca and Hilary

Universal Screening in Reading and Math

We have just completed our beginning of the year universal screenings in reading and math. These assessments, which we conduct three times each year, provide information about each student's reading and math skills. Here in Harvard, we use the DIBELS 8th literacy screener and the AimsWeb math screener, both of which are are approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. These assessments are quick to administer and help us make sure all students are on track for grade-level success in reading and math.

One way we use these screening data is to see who would benefit from additional support in reading and/or math. You will be notified if you child qualifies for intervention, which may take place in their classroom or outside of their classroom in an interventionist's space. We schedule intervention very carefully to be sure that students do not miss instruction in their classrooms. If you have any questions or concerns regarding universal screening or intervention please contact Beth Robinson at brobinson@psharvard.org
